Yesterday we were doing our daily scan for Fall Internships on Twitter via Summize and came across something cool. XM Satellite Radio has a Twitter account solely for its internship program. Although they only have 7 followers at the moment, XM’s interns are doing something groundbreaking - they’re live micro-blogging their internships with corporate blessing. We are impressed! That was enough to convince us to write about XM’s internships; however, we were doubly impressed when a closer look at their internships site reavealed that XM currently has 31 Fall internships listed.
Back when I first heard about satellite radio, I didn’t really understand what was so great about it. Yes, it gives you a lot of listening options, and it sounds great, but I thought CDs or an iPod would be superior alternatives. I was wrong. A couple years ago my Mom got a car with satellite radio installed in it, and I actually started to like it a lot. The service kind of sucks in tree-lined areas, but other than that it’s cool to have so many listening options without having to spend hours crafting a playlist. XM Radio has been working hard to grow the business of satellite radio, and with that has come a ton of interesting areas for interns to work in. If you’re still not quite sure what XM radio is all about, check out the What Is XM? site.
We already told you about XM Interns and Twitter, but we haven’t yet mentioned that they also have a blog and a Facebook Page. They’re about as social media friendly as it gets. XM also has a program called Student Exchange where they hand over one of their stations to a new college radio station ever week. It has nothing to do with internships, but it certainly shows how much XM respects and values college students.
XM typically offers unpaid internships in Washington, DC (a few are in New York, Nashville, and Long Beach as well) in fields such as Finance & Accounting, Legal & Regulatory, Sales & Marketing, Public Relations, Information Technology, Human Resources, Engineering, Broadcasting & Production, E-Business & Web Design. You should take a look at XM Radio’s internship listings where they currently have Fall opportunities posted. Some of the coolest internships that we saw were in Automotive Partnerships, Segment Marketing (Urban), Viral Marketing & Fan Engagement, Music Programming (specific internships for every genre you could imagine), and Sports Programming. These are just the tip of the iceberg, as XM has 31 separate internships posted. The job titles are cool enough, and with XM’s interns’ using social media so readily, it shouldn’t be too hard to find out what it’s really like to intern at XM.
