Back in January, we featured Rapleaf’s entry-level jobs on One Day, One Job. We were pretty impressed by them, and now we’re happy to see that they’re looking for Fall interns. We used this example to illustrate what Rapleaf is all about.

Let’s say instead of giving away a Wii to a One Day, One Job reader over the holiday season (which we actually did), we chose to scalp it on Craigslist. Three interested parties e-mail us with offers to meet up for the exchange. We don’t want to get scammed, and we also want to avoid wasting our time going to meet someone who doesn’t show. How would we find out if the people who e-mailed us are trustworthy? We could try Googling their e-mail address and see what comes up, or we could use RapLeaf to check their reputations.

Willy Franzen's Rapleaf Score

Since then, I’ve played around with Rapleaf some more. It’s a really cool idea, but wider adoption would make it a much more useful service. If you decide to give Rapleaf a try, be sure to give me a rating based on how much you trust me to bring you great info about internships. Here’s my Rapleaf score.

How Does Rapleaf Work?

RapLeaf believes that “it is more profitable to be ethical,” and their e-mail based reputation system is designed with this goal in mind. They use publicly available information in conjunction with user provided information to generate a trustworthiness score for any e-mail address. The score is based mainly on ratings and recommendations from your friends and people whom you have transacted with. RapLeaf also scours the Internet for information related to your e-mail address such as membership on social networks, the legitimacy of your e-mail address’ domain, and Amazon Wish Lists. Rapleaf aggregates this information to provide a clearer picture of who owns an e-mail address and whether they are someone you would want to consider doing business with.

Rapleaf might cause some privacy concerns for you, but you have to remember that the information that they use is publicly available. Being an early-stage startup, they’ve made some mistakes that bothered a lot of people, but they’ve apologized and made things right. Still, we think RapLeaf gives you some pretty strong tools to manage your own privacy that make it worth signing up for. The information that they list is all publicly available, so you might as well be in control of it. RapLeaf is kind of like an open version of eBay’s feedback system that can follow you across the Internet. Too bad eBay banned it’s users from showing RepLeaf scores - looks like they might be a little scared of this upstart.

We’ve done our best to describe RapLeaf’s service to you, but to fully get it, you need to try it - especially if you want a job at RapLeaf.

Rapleaf Interns Are Amazing and Super

RapLeaf is currently looking to hire an Amazing Software Engineering Intern and a Super Business Intern in their San Francisco office. The internship titles are cool, but the job description are even better - check them out. Unlike most companies, Rapleaf is not in any way vague about describing exactly who they want and what they expect from him or her. As if in-depth job descriptions aren’t enough, Rapleaf also has a blog that covers what it’s like working for them. Beyond that, Rapleaf’s Founder, Auren Hoffman, has a personal blog and their development team has a blog about engineering type stuff. If you do end up applying for an internship with Rapleaf, be sure to tell them that we sent you. They offer referral bonuses for some of their positions, and we’d love to reap the rewards. By the way, how impressive is it that a company is actually incentivizing referrals for internships? You can apply for an internship with Rapleaf by e-mailing your cover letter and resume to jobs@rapleaf.com.

These are top notch internships that come with a lot of perks. If you intern at Rapleaf, you’ll be working extremely hard, but you’ll have an extraordinary internship experience. We imagine that the competition for these internships will be fierce, so get your act together quickly if you’re going to apply for a Fall internship with Rapleaf.
